Survivors often suffer from complicated feelings, including depression, relief, blame, sadness, guilt and suicidal ideation. Inability to control one’s ruminating about the loss can cause a survivor to withdraw from life. Speaking about these difficult topics in a survivor group can alleviate fear and stress. Understanding that these feelings are normal responses to a loss gives the survivor confidence that if others have faced and worked through these feelings, they can too.
